Dr Fabio Novelli is an Associate Professor in Experimental Physics at the University of Southampton. He uses terahertz, infrared and visible laser spectroscopy to study how materials respond to light and electromagnetic fields on very short timescales, from femtoseconds to milliseconds.
His work spans liquids, aqueous materials, nanoparticles, proteins, metals, semiconductors, superconductors, correlated oxides, thin films and optoelectronic materials. The common thread is the measurement of electronic, vibrational, thermal and conductive properties in systems where the response is ultra-fast, weak, strongly absorbing, highly coupled, or otherwise difficult to interpret.
Fabio can help industry-facing projects where the question is not only “What is this material made of?”, but “How does this material behave?”. This may include optical or terahertz characterisation, photothermal response, charge transport, hydration and water content, nanoparticle suspensions, coatings and films, conductive or semiconductive materials, optoelectronic devices, and early-stage terahertz sensing or switching concepts.
He can advise on whether spectroscopy is the right tool for a given problem, help design a measurement strategy, and interpret spectra or transient signals that are not straightforward.
