Dr Makars Šiškins is an experimental physicist specialising in advanced materials, nanotechnology and nanoelectromechanical devices. His research focuses on two-dimensional (2D) materials, nanoscale mechanical systems, and emerging quantum materials for next-generation sensing and optomechanical technologies. He works closely with academic and industrial partners to translate fundamental discoveries into future technologies.
We call on Makars’ expertise to support projects involving mechanical (Young’s modulus, strain) and thermal (thermal diffusivity) characterisation of novel thin film and membrane materials, and integration of these into micro and nano-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS/NEMS).

Makars uses the University of Southampton’s state-of-the-art cleanrooms for device fabrication and materials characterisation, as well as bespoke experimental platforms developed for studying nanomechanics of functional materials under extreme conditions.
Makars has a PhD with distinction in Applied Physics from Delft University of Technology and held research positions at the National University of Singapore before joining the University of Southampton in 2025 as Lecturer in Experimental Physics. His collaborations include working with NASA (US), SRON (Space Research Organization, the Netherlands) and Sigma Space Corp (US) to support the development of the X-Ray Integral Field Unit for the NewAthena mission.
