Meet Malgosia Kaczmarek

Malgosia Kaczmarek, Professor in Experimental Optics, uses light as a tool to characterise liquid crystal (LC) materials, to study how they interact with interfaces, and how those properties come together to enable the next generation of displays.

She and her research group have developed OMPA, a bespoke LC analyser, that represents a critical shift in metrological capabilities for LC displays and modulators. A portable, automated and user-friendly instrument, OMPA reduces characterisation bottlenecks in display and liquid crystal photonics R&D.

It is already being used in industry by companies developing near-to-eye displays. OMPA is designed for the rapid and precise characterisation of novel alignment materials and nematic liquid crystals, including dye doped nematic liquid crystals, photoactive alignment layers and devices.

Through consultancy and testing, Malgosia and her team can give provide spatial mapping of the quality and uniformity of your LC device and how it behaves if the bulk liquid crystal or the alignment layer changes.
