Meet Kathryn Rankin

Dr Kathryn Rankin is a computed tomography (CT) specialist at the µ-VIS X-Ray Imaging Centre, the University of Southampton’s dedicated centre for CT and part of the National research facility for X-ray CT (NXCT).

Kathryn joined µ-VIS in 2016, and as one of the Centre’s industry consultants has scanned and analysed countless industrial assemblies and materials of different types, shapes and sizes, building up a wealth of knowledge and experience. The role enables her to pursue her longstanding interest in materials, sparked by her undergraduate studies in mechanical engineering, which she explored further through her PhD in biomechanical engineering.

We call on Kathryn’s expertise when we need a non-destructive method of looking inside something, to help a client find out why a component has gone wrong, for example, or to give them insights into a material’s properties.
